Getting Started with the DAP
Our Mission: A Community-Based Approach to Drug Prevention
Since 1982, the Elks Drug Awareness Program (DAP) has been committed to empowering communities with effective, community-based drug prevention strategies.
Through strong partnerships with federal agencies like:
✅ Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA)
✅ Office of National Drug Control Policy
✅ Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)
…and collaborations with organizations such as Pride Youth Programs, we’ve built one of the most impactful youth substance abuse prevention initiatives in the country.
Hollywood partnerships and influential public figures have helped amplify our message, ensuring it reaches the youth and their families in engaging and relatable ways.
Meet Elroy the Elk: “Hugs Are Better Than Drugs!”
At the heart of our program is Elroy the Elk, our friendly mascot who reminds young children that “hugs are better than drugs!”
For older kids and teens, we use interactive tools like:
Fatal Vision Goggles – Demonstrating the effects of alcohol impairment firsthand
Educational Literature – Millions of pieces distributed annually
100’s of Drug Education Trailers – Bringing awareness to community events like fairs, carnivals, and sports games
Through our Elks Lodges nationwide, we’re making a difference one community at a time.
Engaging Educational Materials
Superheroes Against Substance Abuse
To connect with younger audiences, we teamed up with Marvel to create a unique comic book featuring:
- Popular Marvel superheroes
- Elroy the Elk
- A thrilling battle against underage drinking
Why it works? Kids and teens engage with relatable storytelling while learning about the dangers of substance abuse in a fun and effective way.
More Resources for All Ages
We provide a variety of educational tools tailored for different age groups, including:
Prevention Guides for Parents
Informative Videos
Coloring Books
Public Service Announcements (PSAs)
Posters and Print Materials
Each resource is designed to educate, engage, and empower youth to make healthy, drug-free choices.
Partnerships & Public Influence
Hollywood’s Role in Raising Awareness
We leverage the power of pop culture by collaborating with Hollywood stars who actively support our mission. These celebrity ambassadors help spread awareness to a wider audience, especially among young people.
